PenPen started in 1977 as the Broken Harmony Band playing classical, folk, ethnic and rock music. In 1978, Vicor Music gave the group its first recording break with the single “PenPen De Sarapen”.
Determined to break away from the foreign commercial music trends in the 80’s, EMIL SANGLAY, the group’s founder, composer-singer and arranger revitalized PenPen with new kindred souls who shared his creative aspirations. A new repertoire was developed covering alternative music ranging from progressive folk, folk-rock, New Age, Trance Music, Raga, Oriental to Neo-Ethnic Music.
Since then, the group has won several awards in various national song festivals. EMIL SANGLAY together with his group PenPen has also represented the country in international music competitions.
In the local music scene, EMIL SANGLAY at ang PenPen has become a musical genre. PenPen introduced and popularized Neo-Ethnic or the so called WORLD/EARTH MUSIC of today and has earned the distinction of being the number one exponent & pioneer of this musical style.
